Walnut Grove Pours On 63 in Homecoming Win Over McKinney
PROSPER, Texas — Walnut Grove didn’t wait long to turn its Homecoming game into an offensive showcase Friday night.
The Wildcats scored three touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, built a 42–21 halftime lead and continued pulling away after the break in a 63–35 victory over McKinney.
The win kept Walnut Grove unbeaten at 4–0 and opened district play with another high-scoring performance.
Walnut Grove established the pace almost immediately, putting 21 points on the board in the opening quarter while McKinney managed seven. The Wildcats added another 21 in the second quarter, but the Lions continued to answer often enough to send the teams into halftime at 42–21.
The scoring continued after the break.
Walnut Grove added 14 points in the third quarter while holding McKinney to seven, extending the advantage to 56–28 entering the fourth. Each team scored once more in the final quarter to produce the 63–35 final.
One of Walnut Grove’s sharpest offensive moments came during the third quarter.
Quarterback Ashton Gosselin (#4) connected with Hayden Smith (#87) on a 15-yard touchdown pass that extended the Wildcats’ lead to 55–28. Gosselin delivered the ball with precision into a tight window, completing one of the night’s most sharply executed passing plays.
The touchdown was part of an offensive performance in which Walnut Grove consistently found ways to finish drives. The Wildcats scored nine touchdowns and reached the end zone in every quarter.
McKinney produced 35 points of its own and continued scoring throughout the game, but could not keep pace with Walnut Grove’s offense. The Lions trailed by 14 after the opening quarter and by 21 at halftime before the deficit grew to 28 during the second half.
For Walnut Grove, the victory continued an unbeaten start that has included several different kinds of wins.
The Wildcats opened the season with a 49–28 victory over Lake Ridge, shut out Hebron 35–0 and defeated Reedy 37–9 before Friday’s district opener.
Against McKinney, there was little need for defensive dominance.
Walnut Grove simply kept scoring.
Walnut Grove will carry its 4–0 record into another all-Prosper ISD matchup Sept. 25, when the Wildcats face 3–1 Rock Hill in district play.
