Walnut Grove Breaks Open Tight Game, Beats Rock Hill 44–23
PROSPER, Texas — Walnut Grove and Rock Hill traded momentum through a tightly contested first half Friday night before the Wildcats took control after halftime, defeating the Blue Hawks 44–23 in a matchup of Prosper ISD programs.
Walnut Grove improved to 5–0 with the victory, surviving a Rock Hill challenge that had the Wildcats clinging to a 21–20 lead at halftime.
Rock Hill, playing its Homecoming game, answered a 14-point Walnut Grove first quarter with 20 points in the second. The Blue Hawks repeatedly found ways to stay within striking distance during a first half interrupted by numerous penalties and momentum swings.
The complexion changed after halftime.
Walnut Grove outscored Rock Hill 16–3 in the third quarter, turning the one-point halftime margin into a 37–23 advantage. The Wildcats added another touchdown in the fourth while keeping Rock Hill off the scoreboard over the final period.
Alek Hatcher played a prominent role in Walnut Grove’s offensive and special-teams production. Hatcher broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run and later scored from 2 yards out before adding the ensuing two-point conversion.
He also turned one of the game’s biggest special-teams plays into points.
Walnut Grove blocked a Rock Hill punt, and Hatcher collected the loose ball and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown. The Wildcats also blocked an extra-point attempt during a night in which special teams repeatedly influenced field position and the scoreboard.
Rock Hill had an opportunity to narrow the margin with a two-point conversion that initially appeared successful, but the play was erased by an offensive penalty. The Blue Hawks were backed up and settled for the kick instead.
The sequence came during a stretch in which Rock Hill had remained firmly in the game, but Walnut Grove increasingly controlled play afterward.
Penalties were a persistent factor for both teams throughout the night, repeatedly interrupting drives and negating plays. Neither side was able to establish much rhythm for long stretches of the first half.
Walnut Grove nevertheless found explosive plays from contributors beyond its usual offensive threats, with Hatcher’s 52-yard run among the most significant.
After allowing 20 points in the second quarter, the Wildcats’ defense surrendered only three over the entire second half.
The win keeps Walnut Grove unbeaten through five games and gives the Wildcats another district victory after scoring 63 points against McKinney a week earlier. Rock Hill falls to 3–2 with the loss. Both teams have a bye before returning to district play, with Walnut Grove hosting Dallas Jesuit on Oct. 8 and Rock Hill facing Prosper on Oct. 9.
