Walnut Grove Scores 37 in First Half, Rolls Past Reedy 37–9
FRISCO, Texas — Walnut Grove did all of its scoring before halftime Thursday night, building a 37-point lead and going on to defeat Reedy 37–9 in a non-district game at Toyota Stadium.
The Wildcats scored 16 points in the opening quarter and added 21 in the second, taking a 37–3 advantage into halftime. A first-quarter safety contributed to the early scoring as Walnut Grove controlled the first half.
Reedy’s offense never reached the end zone. The Lions scored on a second-quarter field goal and added field goals in each of the final two quarters, accounting for all nine of their points.
Walnut Grove, a Class 6A program, entered the game unbeaten after victories over Lake Ridge and Heritage. The win over Class 5A Reedy improved the Wildcats to 3–0.
The second half was markedly different from the first. Neither Walnut Grove nor Reedy scored a touchdown after halftime, with the Lions’ two field goals providing the only points over the final two quarters.
Conditions at Toyota Stadium were hot and humid for the Thursday night game. The natural-grass playing surface offered a change from the artificial turf common at many North Texas high school venues, while the stadium’s recessed field and enclosed configuration provided little relief from the heat. A few isolated raindrops fell near the end of the first half, but no meaningful rain followed.
Construction at Toyota Stadium also produced an unusual sideline arrangement. Both teams occupied the same side of the stadium, with home team Reedy positioned toward the south end and Walnut Grove toward the north.
Walnut Grove now turns to district play. The Wildcats are scheduled to face McKinney on Sept. 18 in their first district game of the season.
Reedy fell to 1–2 with the loss and is scheduled to face Liberty on Sept. 24.
