Jesuit Ends Walnut Grove’s Unbeaten Start With 50–49 Overtime Win
PROSPER, Texas — For four quarters Thursday night, Walnut Grove and Dallas Jesuit matched each other almost point for point.
Then Jesuit needed one more.
Jesuit converted a two-point attempt in overtime to defeat Walnut Grove 50–49, handing the Wildcats their first loss of the season in a back-and-forth district game that remained undecided through regulation.
The symmetry on the scoreboard reflected just how close the game was. Both teams scored 14 points in the first quarter, 14 in the second, seven in the third and seven in the fourth, sending the game to overtime tied at 42.
Walnut Grove scored and converted its extra point in overtime to move ahead 49–42. Jesuit answered with a touchdown of its own, but rather than kick to extend the game, the Rangers kept their offense on the field.
The ensuing two-point conversion was successful, giving Jesuit the 50–49 victory.
Walnut Grove never appeared entirely comfortable despite repeatedly answering Jesuit on the scoreboard. The Rangers were able to move the football with limited pressure on their passing game and frequently seemed to have an answer for whatever the Wildcats produced offensively.
Jesuit also brought a small but energetic visiting contingent north to Prosper, adding its voice to a game that otherwise never seemed to develop the rhythm or sustained atmosphere expected from a matchup that remained within one possession throughout the night.
Neither team managed to create meaningful separation.
Jesuit had an opportunity to change that late in the third quarter, but a missed field-goal attempt left the game tied. The miss ultimately became one of several moments that kept the teams locked together into the fourth quarter and eventually overtime.
The Wildcats continued to answer when necessary, but Jesuit did the same. Regulation ended with the teams tied at 42 after producing identical scoring totals in every quarter.
That left the decision to overtime — and Jesuit’s willingness to play for the win rather than another possession.
The loss drops Walnut Grove to 5–1, ending an unbeaten start that included district wins over McKinney and Rock Hill. Jesuit improves to 4–2 with the victory.
Both teams return to district play Friday, Oct. 16, with Walnut Grove traveling to face McKinney Boyd and Jesuit hosting Prosper High School.
