Argyle Overwhelms Highland Park, 70–37, in Marquee North Texas Matchup

Argyle 70, Highland Park 37

ARGYLE, Texas — A matchup featuring two of North Texas’ prominent high school football programs and quarterbacks turned into an offensive showcase for Argyle.

The Eagles amassed 671 yards of offense and scored in every quarter Friday night, defeating Highland Park 70–37 in a non-district matchup at Argyle.

Junior quarterback Hayes Hackney led the Argyle attack, completing 23 of 27 passes for 339 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. The Eagles were equally productive on the ground, rushing for 332 yards and five more touchdowns.

Receiver J. Caldwell was Hackney’s primary target, catching 10 passes for 242 yards and four touchdowns. Running back L. Rexroat added 155 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, while M. Pomeroy rushed for 113 yards and two scores.

The matchup also brought together two accomplished North Texas coaching programs, with Todd Rodgers leading Argyle opposite longtime Highland Park coach Randy Allen.

Argyle established the advantage immediately, scoring 14 unanswered points in the opening quarter.

Highland Park responded with 24 points in the second, but Argyle answered with 21 of its own to take a 35–24 halftime lead. Rather than allowing the Scots to close the gap after the break, the Eagles accelerated.

Argyle scored another 21 points in the third quarter and 14 in the fourth, producing 35 second-half points and reaching 70 for the game.

Highland Park managed 10 points in the third and a field goal in the fourth but could not keep pace with an Argyle offense that consistently generated explosive plays.

For Argyle, the balance was particularly difficult to counter. Hackney averaged 14.7 yards per completion, Caldwell averaged 24.2 yards per reception, and the Eagles averaged nearly 12 yards per rushing attempt while producing five touchdowns both through the air and on the ground.

The 70–37 result moves Argyle to 3–1 and drops Highland Park to 1–3.

Argyle returns to action Friday, Sept. 25, when the Eagles host Grapevine. Highland Park returns home the same night to face Naaman Forest.
